![]() ![]() This bird is often confused with the gray-cheeked thrush. Swainson’s thrushes will fly through from later April to early June. It might be the veery’s nasal “vee-ur veer veer” call that first gets your attention. These birds have a rusty colour on their head, back, and tail and blurry rust-coloured spots on a buff-coloured chest. ![]() Veerys will arrive here in a month or so. This bird has an olive back but a rufous coloured tail. The most striking feature of the hermit thrush is its two-toned look. They are on their way from the southern states to their Northern Ontario breeding territory. Hermit thrushes are seen regularly in the area now through mid-May. The first London report of the year was made last month. They are also beautiful singers.Īmong the spotted thrushes, it’s the hermit thrush that is the early bird. These birds are generally solitary and often lurk secretively on forest floors. When most birders think about thrushes, we think about our five spotted thrushes: hermit thrushes, veerys, Swainson’s thrushes, gray-cheeked thrushes, and of course wood thrushes. Most of these birds arrive back or fly through Southwestern Ontario in March and April.
